Ilizarov
Ilizarov : The Ilizarov procedure is a surgical procedure to reconstruct, reshape, or lengthen a bone (usually a limb) by attaching an orthopedic external fixator to the limb.
External fixation is a surgical treatment in which a rod is screwed into an incision in the affected bone, externalized, and attached to a stabilizing structure outside the body.
Ilizarov surgery uses a special device called the “Ilizarov apparatus or Ilizarov fixator”. Recommended when other reconstruction techniques are not suitable.
Ilizarov Apparatus: This is a set of external fixators consisting of rings (2-6), rods, adjustable nuts and Kirschner wires (a type of stabilizing wire/pin used in orthopedic surgery). The device works on a principle called “distraction osteogenesis” (bone-bone, formation-formation). Osteogenesis means the development and formation of bones.
